Volunteering: A Rewarding Experience

Patient and Caregiver Support Volunteer

Enhance the quality of life for patients and their loved ones. Volunteers work in the patient’s home or in a facility such as a nursing home or assisted living community.

  • Provide Companionship, a Listening Ear, and Practical Assistance
  • Befriend Patients by Sharing an Activity, Reading to Them, and Offering Emotional Support
  • Run Errands, Provide Light Housekeeping or Yard Work
  • Assist With Small Tasks That Help a Patient Feel Better: Polish Fingernails, Write a Letter, Etc.
  • Sit With Patient to Give Caregivers a Respite (Break)

Administrative Volunteer

Provide clerical and administrative support to the office personnel and departments

  • Mailings, Phone Support, Filing, Making Copies and Other Special Reports
  • Prepare Refreshments for Support Groups and Other Training Events
  • Assist During Training Events
  • Assist During Annual Memorial Service and Children’s Bereavement Camp

St. Joseph Ambassador

Our hospice volunteer is a wonderful resource for those who want to learn more about hospice as an end-of-life care option. Ambassadors create an informal person-to-person network with the goal of increasing awareness and understanding of hospice in the local community.

  • Share the Concept of Hospice as Promoting Quality Life Rather Than “giving Up” as an Individual Approaches End-of-Life
  • Provide Information to Individuals, or Groups and Organizations Such as Your Church or Community Club
  • Encourage Individuals to Join the St. Joseph Facebook Page and Meetup Group
  • Share Information on Resources Available to the Community and Encourage Individuals to Use the Resources Available.
  • Telling a Friend About Your Work as a Hospice Volunteer and the Rewarding Experiences You Have to Share With Patients, Families, and the Hospice Team

Bereavement Volunteer

Provide support to surviving loved ones for a period of up to 13 months following the death of a patient.

  • Work Under Direction of St. Joseph Chaplain
  • Make Follow-Up Calls
  • Send Out Mailings
  • Possibly Visit With the Patient’s Loved Ones to Provide Companionship and a Listening Ear
